You probably know that you should never put a wool sweater in the dryer, but things happen. Whether you forgot to look at the label or simply forgot to pull your sweater out of a big load before tossing it in the dryer, the reality is still the same. You’re looking at a tiny ball of wool that seems more appropriate for a doll than a human. Fortunately, you still have time to save it.
What You Will Need
Baby shampoo or hair conditioner
Large bath towels
Sink or tub
Foam core board or heavy bulletin board
Clothespins or clips
Squeeze about 3 tablespoons of baby shampoo or conditioner into the sink or tub, and then fill it about half full with water at room temperature. Make sure the water is not too hot or too cold.
Dunk the sweater into the water and use your hands to thoroughly massage the soapy water through it. Take your time and make sure that all the fibers are thoroughly coated.
Leave the sweater to soak for at least 30 minutes.
Drain the tub or sink, but do not rinse the sweater. Gently press the sweater against the edge or bottom of the sink or tub to get out excess water, but do not wring it or allow it to twist.
Lay a thick bath towel on the countertop and place the sweater flat on top. Then cover the sweater with another thick bath towel. Starting from the bottom, roll the pile into a burrito shape. Press hard with your hands to remove as much water as possible.
Lay the foam core board or bulletin board flat on the countertop. Place the sweater on top and gently stretch it back into its original shape. Use clothespins or clips to anchor it to the board once you are happy with the shape.
Stand the board up and lean it against a wall. Place a towel beneath the sweater to catch drips, and let it fully air dry.
Remove the sweater from the board and examine it. If it is not fully back to its original size and shape, repeat steps 1 through 7.
While most sweaters can be saved this way, it doesn’t always work. It depends on the exact fibers and weave pattern in the sweater. This process also involves a great deal of labor.
